ABSTRACT

Introduction. Hermetia illucens is a dipterous which can produce gastroenteric pseudomyasis in humans and domestic animals. The larvae develop in a wide range of animal and vegetable decaying materials and can be accidentally ingested by animals. H. illucens is found worldwide; however, its presence in domestic animals has not been reported in Southern Mexico
Clinical case. A case of gastric pseudomyasis in a Simmental male bovine (1 year old) from the municipality of Sucila, Yucatan, Mexico is reported. The cattle showed chronic tympanites for 13 days. At necropsy 20 larvae of H. illucens in the fourth stage were found. The ruminal mucous showed macroscopic inflammation and hemorrhages.
Discussion. Although H. illucens is found worldwide, few cases of pseudomyasis in humans and animals are reported. In humans and animals the larvae of H. illucens can accidentally cause gastroenteric pseudomyasis with important pathological lesions.
