ABSTRACT

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome is a rare clinical condition that has controversial diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. It usually presents with signs of upper intestinal obstruction characterized by weight loss, anorexia, early satiety, nausea, repeated vomiting and postprandial abdominal pain which are caused by compression of the third part of the duodenum at the level of the aortomesenteric angle. We present the case of a 17 year old girl which was suspected to have an eating disorder due to frequent vomiting, weight loss and depression. Clinical and radiologic studies suggested superior mesenteric artery syndrome and therefore underwent laparoscopic section of Treitz´s ligament with favorable results. Some of the physiopathologic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are discussed.
