Folates intake, dietetic survey, neural tube defects.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of neural tube defects (DTN) in Nuevo Leon State is high compared with the rest of the country. DTN are related to a low intake of folic acid in women during periconception period or with genetic disorders. The objective of this study was to determine the folates intake of fertil-age women in a community at the metropolitan area of Nuevo Leon, using a dietetic survey that evaluates the habitual intake and another one that determines the daily intake. A questionnaire of alimentary frequency (CFA) was designed with high content foods of folic acid and which are often eaten in the region. CFA was applied through home visits to 150 women from 15 to 35 years old of Pueblo Nuevo, Apodaca; at the same a series of 24 hours recall was applied. The data obtained were typed in the nutritional software SISDyA in order to get the values of daily intake of folic acid and they were analyzed statistically. The values of daily intake of folates (daily mcg) obtained by CFA were shown in average values and median (percentiles 25 and 75). They were 378 (238,599) and represent the habitual intake of the studied sample. With the 24 hours recall, the average value was 254 with a median of 209 and percentiles of 99 and 350 that represent the daily intake. Showing the differences of intake values according to the used surveys, it is important to underline the dietetic methodology used in epidemiologic studies in order to be useful for the appropriate orientation of health policies.
