Isolation of Prototheca spp in a case of bovine mastitis

Text Extraction

The purpose of this study was to describe a case of bovine mastitis caused by the colourless alga Prototheca in a dairy herd with 230 milking cows. The California Mastitis Test and bacteriological examinations were done. Prototheca spp was isolated from milk samples in 13 cows with clinical mastitis. The affected quarters were not noticeably swollen, but an increased density was usually detected by palpation with a reduced size, as well as milk production. The infected quarters had been unsuccessfully treated with a wide variety of antibiotics.
