ABSTRACT

The cord blood bank (CBB) is a therapeutic tool that complements the needs of clinical programs in bone marrow transplantation and seeks the collection of hematopoietic progenitor cells classified by HLA histocompatibility antigens, for the cure of certain diseases: hematologic, oncologic, immune deficiencies, inborn errors of metabolism and hemoglobinopathies among others. The economic situation of the Latin American countries requires to establish a model of cord blood bank that can be sustainable long term. The concrete proposal is to create a mixed cord blood bank: a cord blood bank dedicated to collecting, processing, study, storage, sorting and release of hematopoietic progenitor units for use in unrelated transplants and/or for family use, that conforms an inventory from 3,000 to 4,000 units of high quality, guaranteed for transplantation. This proposal aims is to form a cord blood bank that meets all the requirements that dictate NETCORD-FACT standards and be accredited by international agencies.
