ABSTRACT

To determine the effectiveness of biofeedback in the rehabilitation of adult perineal anal incontinence. Methods: A quasi-experimental study, men and women diagnosed with anal incontinence, mean age 20-75 years, time course of four months or more. Potential underwent pudendal nerve somatosensory evoked and applied fifteen sessions perineal re-education through electromyographic biofeedback and home program. The incontinence severity scale was established with the Hospital of San Marcos and the improvement in visual analogue scale. Wilcoxon test was used. Results: We studied twelve patients, eleven male and one female, average age 58.3 years. The pudendal nerve evoked potentials were normal in 9 patients (75%). The average initial score of anal incontinence was 12.9 » 13 and 5.5 » 5 after treatment. In the statistical analysis with the Wilcoxon test, a reduction statistically significant at p = 0.002. 66% of patients showed an improvement rated as excellent. Conclusion: A program designed and supervised perineal re-education using biofeedback electromyographic is effective in patients with anal incontinence, particularly in patient satisfaction.
