ABSTRACT
Objective: To estimate the frequency of gossypibomas and attitude of the surgeon when faced with them
Design: Descriptive, comparative, observational study.
Setting: 2002 National Congress of Surgery.
Method: A survey was performed among 120 surgeons. Two groups were formed; one constituted by those that have forgotten a gossypiboma in the cavity, and the other by those that denied it. Both groups were compared.
Results: Ninety-seven surgeons responded, with an average experience of 15.3 years and 16.4 surgeries per month. Thirty-two percent left a gossypiboma in the cavity: 80% have dealt with it, and 94% know someone that left one in the cavity. No significant difference existed in the attitude of both groups. More than half of the surveyed surgeons avoid informing the patient if possible. They ascribe this event mainly to the instrumentalist. Most of the surgeons did not agree in ascribing mal-practice to the surgeon.
Conclusion: The presence of gossypibomas is not infrequent. Faced with this event, the attitude of both groups of surgeons was similar. It is urgent to legislate on this issue with the help of collegiate organisms.
