ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe an infrequent case of type I choledochal cyst in an adult.
Setting: Second level health care hospital.
Design: Report of a clinical case.
Description of the case: Woman of 36 years of age, with occasional epigastric pain of 6 months of evolution, accompanied by nausea and vomiting, without jaundice antecedents. The abdomen was soft to palpation, slight pain in the epigastrium, no mass or tumor was detected. Laboratory tests, that is, blood and hepatic functional tests, were normal. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography confirmed the choledochal cyst diagnosis. Laparotomy was performed to remove the cyst, finding it to be of Type 1 and measuring 10 cm in its largest diameter. The proximal stump of the choledochus was anastomosed to a jejunal Y in Roux loop. Except for some correctable complications, the patient evolved satisfactorily, and is at present asymptomatic.
Conclusion: An efficacious treatment of Type 1 choledochal cyst in the adult is its surgical extirpation.
