ABSTRACT

Influenza is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease caused by different subtypes of virus. Recently, an epidemic of the human influenza virus A started in Mexico, and it was also detected in several other countries around the world. To address this epidemiological emergency, Medica Sur Clinic Foundation has implemented a comprehensive contingency plan based on World Health Organization (WHO), Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) and Ministry of Health recommendations , which goal was to confront and contain the outbreak of human influenza A H1N1, attending efficiently, and with high degrees of quality and safety to all who sought medical care while protecting the medical staff and paramedics. In order to achieve this, the Sanitary Emergency Committee was established with hospital authorities and Intensive Care, Infectious Diseases, Nursing, Emergency, Laboratory, Radiology, Informatics, Education, Hospitalization and various support services. During the contingency period, 2944 patients were admitted in the Emergency department, only 118 of which required to be hospitalized. Twenty three patients (16 adults, 7 children) tested positive for human influenza A H1N1 virus. The mortality rate was 0.06%. With the security measures implemented, there were no cases of influenza among the hospital staff. During the current outbreak, we assessed our response capability and organization, resulting in a viable project that gave excellent results and can turn into a model for other institutions.
