Cyanoacrylate: hemostatic in hepatic trauma. Experimental study in an animal model

ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish the feasibility and efficacy of cyanoacrylate as a hemostatic agent in traumatic hepatic lesions.
Setting: Department of Experimental Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Guanajuato.
Design: Experimental, longitudinal, prospective study in an animal model.
Statistical analysis: Univariate analysis.
Material and methods: We performed a laparotomy in 10 dogs and performed two differently deep lesions using a surgical blade. We employed cyanoacrylate in the lesions sites to achieve hemostasis and tissue bonding. A second laparotomy was performed one week later for macroscopic evaluation and for biopsy sampling of the lesions.
Results: Hemostasis was obtained in all experimental animals and each of the lesions. One animal died due to causes unrelated to the surgery. Bonding of the tissue borders was also satisfactory in all lesions. Two animals formed adherences but only one at the lesion site. There were no cases of infection. The histopathological study revealed no microscopic evidence of the adhesive 7 days after its use.
Conclusions: Ethyl cyanoacrylate is an effective tissue adhesive useful to promote hemostasis and sealing of the hepatic parenchyma in penetrating trauma in the animal model. It is a well-tolerated, effective, easily applied and low cost agent.
