ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the experience with cardiac trauma in the city of Cancún (QR, Mexico) during an 8-year period in three hospitals.
Setting: Regional hospitals.
Design: Observational, retrospective study.
Results: In a 7-year-10-month period, 24 patients were studied, 11 with right ventricle lesion, 9 with left ventricle lesion, and 1 patient each with lesion of the left, right atrium, superior cava vein and superior pulmonary vein. Four patients presented associated abdominal lesions and two had associated lesions of the ascending aorta. No coronary lesions were observed. Four patients presented post-traumatic pericarditis. Mortality was of 21% (5 patients). All patients were males and their ages ranged from 19 to 39 years.
Conclusion: Tamponade is a positive prognostic factor; mortality was associated mostly to lesions caused by firearm bullets and to ascending aorta lesions. An extracorporeal circulation pump was not always necessary.
