ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish whether a system of cutting by rotation and intense aspiration is useful for the treatment of benign breast lesions.Setting: University health system and second level health care hospital.
Design: Prospective, experimental study.
Patients and methods: Prospective study in simile, animal model, and clinical assay, the latter one in five patients with fibrous adenoma diagnosis. Resections were performed with modifications made to the rotating knife system, used by the orthopedics service, combined with an aspiration system, as used for liposuction in plastic surgery, associated to the visibility provided by a real time linear ultrasound apparatus, with a 7.5 mHz transductor.
Results: Five fibrous adenomas were resected for the clinical assay. After one year of follow-up, two patients showed recurring disease. Resection procedures lasted an average of 9.4 ± 5.8 min; hemorrhage was minimal. Samples suitable for histopathological studies were obtained from three of the five patients.
Conclusion: The method is suitable for complete resection of the lesion, provides fast recovery, and produces minimal cosmetic damage. Recurrences occurred in two patients.
