ABSTRACT

Objective. The principal objective of this study was: to know the frequency of complication and associated factors to the total parental nutrition (TPN) in newborns. Material and methods. It is a cross sectional study, retrolective, in regard of 44 clinical records of neonates which received TPN. Results. The mean administration time of TPN was 20.0 ± 14.3 days; 32 (73%) of the neonates were prematures. In 27 (61%) complications were found, principally, the metabolic ones. In relation to the associated factors the prevalence ratios were not significant. Conclusion. A close follow of the procedure for preparation of the TPN solutions and the clinical surveillance of the neonates who receive TPN, specially the prematures, it is needed.
