ABSTRACT

Background: The international availability of scientific documents produced by doctors of the ABC Medical Center had not been studied until now, its characteristics and behavior are not known, although it´s known that there is a certain representation due to commercial data with certain visibility in the international field. Objective: To identify the behavior of scientific productivity of the doctors at the ABC Medical Center through the construction and analysis of bibliometric pointers. Methods: The application of the pointers allowed us to identify the more productive periods, the most productive doctors, lines of investigation, typology, what people prefer and how many of these papers have been quoted. As reference we used indexed articles from the Elsevier publications data base. For data analysis, Excel 97 was used. Results: From a total of 387 documents studies, the most productive year was 2006. There is a core of 10 doctors that have published about 59% of the documents analyzed. Most publications, 14% were found in the journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Most doctors prefer to publish scientific documents (73%). Of all the documents analyzed, only 4% have been quoted more than 50 times. Lastly, we observed that the main subject is medicine, being 85% of the total of the documents published from the doctors at the ABC Medical Center. Conclusions: The end results of this study allow us not only to evaluate the behavior of scientific production of the medical staff but also to contribute in pointing out the trends toward which the hospital is moving. This study can help enable the hospitals administrative authorities decide the best on the choise of the best person for a medical position, personnel promotions and prioritize resources allocation.
