Leukocyte Esterase and Interleukin 1 beta in gingival crevicular fluid as mark predictors in periodontal disease

ABSTRACT
Purpose. To value the utility of the leukocyte esterase (LE) and Interleukin 1 beta (1L-1$) as mark predictors of progresión of peridontal disease.
Material and methods. A case control study was made between august 2005 and february 2006 in endoperiodonthology clinic in Tlalnepantla, Estado de México. Cases were patients with confirmed periodontal disease diagnosis. Samples from 290 patients were colected with paper points in the gingival sulcus. Levels of LE and IL-1$ in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was measured. The semiquantification of LE was measured with reactive strips and quantification with spectrofotomether at 400 nm calculating an absorbent factor expressed in leukocytes/:L. The IL-1$ was quantified with an ELISA test. Asociated risk factors were evaluated, deep probing, bone resorption and plax index obtained from the clinic file. Odds Ratio were estimated.
Results. The semiquantification LE was positive in cases and the quantification showed from 11 to 80 leukocytes/: L for cases and from 0 to 10 in controls. The IL-1$ in cases reported levels upr to 5.2 ng/ml. The enzymatic tests had positive asociation with deep probing up to 6 mm and bone resorption up to 4 mm. and plax index higher than 70%.
Conclusions. The progresión of periodontal disease can be estimated by the levels of LE and IL-1$ founded in GCF.
