ABSTRACT

The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a benign reactive hyperplastic inflammatory lesion that results from a minor irritation. It is one of the most common forms of gingival hyperplasia, therefore it is important for general dentists to recognize its clinical characteristics in order to ensure early recognition, correct diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.
This article looks at the case of a 70-year-old male in whom intraoral examination revealed an asymptomatic mass in the maxillary gingiva. The lesion, which had been present for one year and had displayed gradual growth, was surgically excised. We discuss a number of the features of the etiology, differential diagnosis and therapy.
