Plantometry in patients with Achilles tendon rupture underwent surgery

ABSTRACT
Achilles tendon injury occurs as a result of training deficiencies, environment factors or as a systemic disease manifestation. There are predisposing factors such as chronic inflammation, vascular affections, scars, alignment defects, rigidity and aging.
Objective: To determine alterations in postural gait phase, with baroplantometry in patients that underwent to Achilles tenoplasty.
Materials and method: Retrospective longitudinal, comparative, observational, cases and controls study since 1994 to 1996. We established two groups which were tested with computerized baroplantometry. Group 1 with patients over 18 years old, that underwent surgery, they were studied after cast removal. Group 2 healthy volunteers.
Statistics: Mean, standard deviation, mean standard error, Leven’s test, “t” test and χ
2Results: 28 patients (21 men and 7 women) were included, they were coupled with age healthy volunteers. Mean age was 33.8 years. Group 1 patients with Achilles tenoplasty with cast immobilization average of 6.07 weeks, 17 right and 12 left, injury mechanism by direct trauma 10.8, during sport activities 89.2%, total rupture 7.1%, partial rupture 92.9%.
Discussion: Our study showed a gender tendency of 3:1 (male:female), age mean of 33.8 years. Statistical data suggested a muscular imbalance with deficiency of plantar flexors, which produces an alteration in maximal pressure zones determined by dynamic baroplantometry.
Conclusion: The baroplantometry assessment is objective study to evaluate the pressure, force, area and maximal pressure zones during dynamic gait postural phase, that gives us a objective data of the changes that occur on patients underwent to tenoplasty after Achilles tendon injury, in which we found a muscular imbalance with deficiency of the plantar flexor muscles; we can plan a rehabilitation program targeting this deficiencies.
