ABSTRACT

The Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), also known as neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin or trabecular cancer, is a somewhat rare and aggressive type of cancer with a high rate of recurrence. It begins in the Merkel cells, the touch receptors of the skin, and has a high mortality rate. It is common in elderly patients and in a significant number of immunosuppressed patients. In recent years, the incidence of MCC has tripled and new studies suggest a close link with polyomavirus infections. Clinically, this neoplasia appears in areas with a high level of exposure to actinic radiation on the head and neck. The aim of this work is to describe two cases of MCC in which the condition has affected the periorbital region.
