ABSTRACT

Polymyositis is a disorder characterized by inflammation and necrosis of muscle fibers, occasionally associated with skin disease (dermatomyositis), serositis, paraneoplastic syndrome and other diseases. In less than 1% is associated with massive pleural effusion. In 15-20% of patients with the diagnosis of polymyositis are detected malignancies, the most common being breast, lung, ovary, stomach and Hodgkin lymphoma. Present with progressive muscle weakness, proximal, symmetrical, with increased muscle enzymes, histologically confirmed by muscle biopsy and electromyographic pattern typical. The clinical course is variable, and for treatment are given steroids and disease modifying drugs such as methotrexate, azathioprine or cyclophosphamide.
