ABSTRACT

Quality of medical care is an essential component in the analysis of health systems, its institutions and the medical act. Physician’s age has been identified as a determinant element of quality of care. However, there is little information on this respect. This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between physician’s age and medical complaints submitted to the CONAMED. It was found that the higher incidence of malpractice occurs between 30-49 years of age. Within the group with the highest incidence are the events related to treatment, either medical or surgical and in particular in the fields of traumatology and orthopedics (21.4%), gynecology and obstetrics (17.9%), and general medicine (10.7%). We conclude that physician’s age does not seem to relate directly with malpractice events.
