ABSTRACT

Background: The endoscopic examination of the colon was introduced in routine endoscopic practice at the beginning of 1970, since then colonoscopy has undergone important changes in the design of equipment and technology. In Mexico, the first colonoscopy was performed in 1971 in the Hospital Juárez of SSA.
Objectives: To show colonoscopic findings of the Endoscopy Service in a period of six months, to know the indications and most common diagnoses in our environment, and to analyze the diseases found.
Patients and method: We performed a prospective, descriptive, observational and analytical study during the period from March 1 to July 31, 2008 with patients whose colonoscopy was performed in the Hospital Regional 1° de Octubre of the ISSSTE.
Results: 212 colonoscopies were performed over a period of 6 months, 40% (85) were males, average age 50.5 years (range 10 to 91 years). From all colonoscopies, 132 (62.2%) were conducted in people older than 50 years, with a maximum elevation in the fifth decade of life. Colonoscopies were considered complete when it reached the cecum, which was achieved in 197 (93%), in 15 (7%) the study was not finished.
Conclusions: The indications of colonoscopies are already written in the literature, and agree with our results, in patients over 50 years old the colonic symptoms are more frequent, therefore the colonoscopy is indicated. In our experience the most frequent indication of colonoscopies is hemorrhage of lower bowel.
