ABSTRACT

The Central Blood Bank from Centro Médico Nacional «Siglo XXI» had implemented strategies to recruit platelet donors from south of the Mexico City. In the years 2003 there was a very important deficit: 60,000 donors of platelets concentrates were needed and only there was few more of 10,000. This Blood Bank provides blood components to sixteen hospital’s; five of them of high speciality, three regional, seven general hospitals and one medical unit for ambulatory surgery. The gathering of blood components for apheresis allows to adapt the production according to the patient’s needs, and thus, to cover the hospital’s, patients transfused platelet concentrates obtained by apheresis; in order to reduce the risk of infectious diseases associated with the transfusion and the risk of sensitization to multiple antigens (alloimmunization), using a component with high degree of leucoreduction. To avoid risk of TRALI are excluded the donors with transfusional records and multiparous women. The procedures for apheresis platelets belongs to not related donors and gives support to patients who enter to any protocol of leukodepleted apheresis products to avoid transmission of CMV. All this has led to increased consumption and decresed platelet apheresis platelet consumption standard.
