ABSTRACT

Facial changes with age are expressed by an “orbitalization” of the malar and inferior eyelid region. The skin, orbicular muscle of the eyelids and orbital fat appear as a unit. With age, these limits are stressed. The objective of this work was to identify the changes that occur in the soft and bony tissues of the periorbital region in Mexican women between 20 and 60 years of age. A study was carried out in the Traumatology Hospital “Dr. Victorio de la Fuente Narváez”, IMSS, in 160 women between 20 and 60 years old stratified in decades. Vertical and transverse length, depth of the edges supra and infraorbital and lateral wall in both orbits; vertical and transverse opening of the eyelids, interchantal distances medium and lateral and thickness of the upper and lower eyelids and malar; thickness, angulation and distance of the eyebrows to the supraorbital edge were measured. In the palpebral opening and lateral edge of the orbit meaningful differences were not found. Lateral canthus position descended as of 30 years and the eyebrow angle was more obtuse starting at 50 years. In the supraorbital edge a progressive decrease of its thickness was found, stressed in the group between 51 and 60, and upon comparing this with the group between 21 and 30, a meaningful difference of 2.32 mm (p ‹ 0.000) was found. These findings confirm bony absorption and soft tissues ptosis, that are progressive and begin around 30 and are more marked after 50.
