ABSTRACT

Fifty-three teenagers with gigantomastia and reduction mammaplasty performed before they were 19 years old with an inferior central pedicle flap technique and resection of 1,520 to 3,040 g (mean of 1,710 g) and follow up from five to eleven years are presented. A questionnaire showed 100% satisfaction with the procedure, improvement in physical upset, body image and self confidence; 95% of them would have the same surgery again. 93% have recommended the procedure to other patients; 76% are now married and 53% have had at least one baby. 64% were able to breast feed normally. Long-term evaluation, showed 76% had vertical scar and the inferior mammary hemisphere elongation, with flaccidity and upper mammary loss volume; 40% declared tolerable disgust and uncomfort with the resulting scars, and 30% had hypoesthesia in their nipples without reason for complaining. At the end of their pregnancies, 13% was operated again to correct form, this second surgery was considered strictly aesthetic and one patient had mammary subpectoral implants put in; placed as a complement.
