ABSTRACT

Obturation techniques are changing very rapidly as new filling materials are developed and new research is carried out into the benefits and drawbacks that such materials represent for pulp tissue. The sandwich technique is well-known; it consists of using conventional glass ionomer cement as the cavity base, and restoring the tooth with a composite resin. This article seeks to show how to place a high fluoride release glass ionomer as the base of the restoration to fill it with a resin composite, sectioning to control C-factor and avoid polymerizing more than two sections at a time so as to decrease tension.
According to the research, this technique is ideal when there has been significant loss of dentin and when restorative materials placed close to the pulp can harm it, such as acid etching involving the placing of 4th and 5th generation adhesives. Furthermore, this technique allows the remaining dentin to be remineralized and filling materials to be used that are similar to the dentin and to the enamel.
