ABSTRACT

Background. Breastfeeding has advantages, mainly during the first 6 months of the baby’s life, the related immunologic benefits are protection anti-infections. Objective. To evaluate, if Breastfeeding is a risk factor or protective factor to get breathing and gastro-intestinal infections in lactates. Material and methods. A test was applied 250 lactate’s mothers among 0 and 24 months old whom were evaluated in Hospital “1ro de Octubre” from September 1ro of 1999 to June 31 the 2000. The variables were about the mothe and her baby feeding type, time of Breastfeeding, if the babies got or not breathing infections, gastrointestinal infections and how many times. Results were analyzed by means of measures of frequency and association. Results. It was found the mixed nursing was the type of more frequent feeding. Exclusive Breastfeeding turns out to be protective factor to preventive breathing infections (RM 0.44) and gastro-intestinal infections (RM:0.37). Mixed nursing feeding was associated to 1.8 times more risk to breathing infections (RM 1.8) and 2.04 times more risk of gastrointestinal infections, (RM:2.04). Artificial nursing feeding is associates to risk (1.15) more breathing infections (RM:1.15) and 1.1 times more gastrointestinal infections (RM:1.1) mixed and artificial Nursing presented association statistically significant to breathing infections (P 0.01). Exclusive and mixed nursing presented an association significant to gastrointestinal infections (P 0.05). There was not statistical significance among occupation, school level, age and nursing feeding type to the children. Conclusions. Breastfeeding offers protection against breathing and gastro-intestinal infections.
