ABSTRACT

Introduction: We described the navigation capacity of a robotic arm. The robot held the laparoscope; the robot was designed in Mexico. Procedures were performed in abdomen and thorax in a dog. Material and method: A robot arm developed at Centro de Investigacion y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional, weight 25 kg and 5º degrees of freedom to hold position the laparoscope as follows inside; outside; out; in and left and right inside abdomen. Surgical procedures were performed at the Escuela Superior de Medicina of the Instituto Politecnico Nacional. Results: Results offered good manipulation and navigation of the laparoscope with the possibilities to employ this system on humans in the future. The capacity or the navigation was limited to navigation in horizontal directions. Laparoscopic procedures such as thoracoscopic and laparoscopic navigations, mesocolon dissection of left colon and sigmoid, of hilum right lung, and troncular vaguectomy transthoracics were performed with lenghty surgical times on March 29, 2001 with manipulator assistance or 5o freedom. Discussion: It is necessary to increase robot navigation capacity to navigate without limitations in future procedures, and to design a new model to permit horizontal navigation.
