Bariatric surgery, laparoscopic gastric plication.

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a pandemic. For its treatment, a new procedure called laparoscopic gastric plication, has been described; this technique has the potential to reduce the possible complications by creating a gastric restriction without using implants, gastric resections nor anastomosis. Gastric plication is similar to sleeve gastrectomy, because creates a gastric tube by excluding the greater curvature with the creation of an invaginated greater curvature by suture means. A total of 7 patients were operated within a 12 months period; the average body mass index was 43.5 kg/m3; there were no surgical complications; they were discharged at 30 hours post-op and the mean excess body weight loss was 34.1% at 12 months follow up. Gastric Plication is safe, reproducible, cheap, and effective as a bariatric procedure; larger studies with longer follow-ups are still needed to evaluate its long-term efficacy.
