ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to assess the position of the mandibular condyle after reduction of mandible prognathism by orthognathic surgery and to observe the adaptive remodeling one year after surgery. The study was conducted in the Department of Oral Surgery of the Professional Studies Division of the School of Dentistry, UNAM. We studied 10 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery using pre and post surgery control cephalograms, the inclination of the mandibular condyle by measuring the condyle angle in relation to the center of the mandible branch and the centre of the condyle, and the position of TMJ with the base of the skull, angle sella and angle joint. The angle formed by the mandible branch and the centre of the condyle observed in the cephalograms decreased with a preoperative average of 19.1° and postoperative of 17.8°. The sella angle had an average of 123° and 120°, respectively, indicating that the relationship with the base of the skull was in keeping with the clinical standard; and the articulating angle, averaging 142.9° and 149.1°, showing a decrease in the projection of the face after surgery.
