ABSTRACT

Working length determination in endodontic therapy is crucial, it limits the biomechanic preparation and it affects the periapical tissues and the endodontic prognosis. The objective of the study was to compare in vivo the accuracy of the electronic apex locators (EAL) Root ZX II, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator and the conventional x-ray method (RM) using the smaller diameter of young premolar roots canals as reference. Materials and methods: An experimental, comparative study was realized, with paired measurement of the length obtained by different methods. They included young premolars (category II, III and IV of Patterson) without roots malformations, or fractures. The teeth were measured In vivo obtaining the working length (WL) by EAL and RM; being extracted to obtain the smaller diameter length. Results: The repeated measures ANOVA test revealed not statistically significant differences between the different methods (p› .05). In category III, Root ZX presented .7 mm of overestimation respect to the length reference, not being different from the other procedures. Conclusions: The studied methods are reliable to obtaining the working length in young premolars teeth.
