ABSTRACT

The extraction of teeth for orthodontic purposes is a controversial subject in the specialty. With the increased interest in outcome assessment in orthodontics, a method for measuring is needed, one way are the occlusal indices. The PAR index was developed specifically to measure outcome treatment; it reduces subjectivity by the index´s defined criteria.
General objective: quantify the components of the PAR index in patients of the Orthodontic Graduate BUAP treated without extractions.
Materials and methods: clinical studies, descriptive, cross, retrolectivo. We selected 120 records of discharged patients who met the inclusion criteria, treated by residents of the postgraduate orthodontic BUAP; 66 cases with four premolar extractions (Group A) and 54 without extractions (Group B), with the PAR index (Peer Assessment Rating) was determined their effectiveness.
Results: the difference between the sample mean obtained before and after treatment were statistically significant (p=.0001), both groups showed similar values at the end (T2 Ext PAR=7.33 95% CI =+0.66, with a percentage reduction of 63.56%, compared with the PAR T2 S/Ext=5.92 95% CI=+0.71 to 62.55% reduction). The average duration of treatment showed a significant difference between groups A and B (p=0.0001).
Conclusion: there is a marked difference in the groups with and without extractions prior to treatment, but these were not statistically different at the end, suggesting that it is possible to achieve such good relations dentooclusales in patients with extractions and in those cases without them.
