ABSTRACT

Objective: Determine whether aprepitant is superior to ondansetron in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing open cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. Material and methods: Included 60 patients aged 18 years randomly assigned to two groups, one group received 80 mg aprepitant orally and the other intravenous ondansetron 4 mg before induction of anesthesia. Documented episodes of nausea and vomiting to get to the recovery room, at 6 and 24 hours postoperatively. Results: Aprepitant group had better control of nausea upon arrival in the recovery room and 6 hours after surgery, with results similar to ondansetron at 24 hours. Conclusion: Aprepitant is superior to ondansetron in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing open cholecystectomy.
