ABSTRACT

Objective: Many reports have described the benefits of the hand-assisted approach in colorectal surgery. The purpose of the present study is to determine the current status of the hand-assisted approach by responding to four controversial issues in hand assisted colectomy. Methods: Studies on Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery were identified using electronic databases like MEDLINE and PubMed. Results: We found 27 reports which included 10 descriptive studies, 5 non-randomized trials, 7 randomized trials and 1 meta-analysis. Conclusions: Hand assisted laparoscopic colectomy is a safe and reliable approach with better over-all results to open surgery and similar short-term benefits to the laparoscopic assisted approach. Hand-assisted colectomy provides a shorter operating time in segmental and total colectomies and it is associated with lower conversion rates. It also plays an important role in teaching fellows laparoscopic colorectal procedures.
