The pregnant teenager: a health problem

ABSTRACT

Objective: At a specializing clinic, the National Perinatology Institute in Mexico City takes care of pregnant adolescents 16 years of age. The objective is to know the results with a multidisciplinary team. Material and method: A retrospective survey that analyzes 899 patients 16 years of age who were assisted during 1999-2000. Emphasizing nursing and control of fertility in each of these cases, this report explains related aspects such as education, number of sexual companions, initiation and number of prenatal visits to the doctor, the result of cervicovaginal culturing, associated pathology, morbidity, gestational age and obstetric resolution. Results are reported in percentages. Results: Supported by the majority, this study shows that adolescents are not promiscuous because only 91.7% refer to one sexual companion and also because of normal results when cultivating cervicovaginal secretion; associated pathologies and were urinary infections (23.5%), anemia and undernourishment (17.9%), and R.P.M. and preterm birth (20.2%). Vaginal via was the obstetric resolution in 54.7%; thanks to an appropriate prenatal attention in 84.4% of pregnancies were full-term, maternal nursing was promoted, and as a whole mothers were and instructed about their fertility control. Discussion: As a social problem that will allow to continue further surveys about the subject, we lent selective attention to the results was created through high quality prenatal visits to the doctor; at the same, time connection that sustained the success obtained attempting to fastem family adjustment, which will lead to satisfactory progress.
