ABSTRACT
In order to have reliable statistics and know the diagnosis and intervention made orthognathic surgery in the maxillofacial surgery department of the Juarez Hospital of Mexico, was conducted a retrospective, longitudinal, analytic and descriptive during four years. We included 163 patients, with a 2:1 female-male gender ratio, an average age of 22 years. The most common diagnosis was mandibular prognathism. We also recorded surgical time averaged 156 minutes in the mandibular surgery, 207 minutes in mandibular and chin surgery, and 326 minutes in triple orthognathic surgery; anesthetic time was 184 minutes for mandibular surgery, 225 minutes in mandibular and chin surgery, and 358 minutes triple orthognathic surgery; also quantified the need for transfusion (three patients), complications (10 undesirable fractures), and reoperation (10 patients). Today orthognathic surgery is a treatment frequently performed by maxillofacial surgeons in conjunction with the orthodontist, and gives to the patient functional, aesthetic and psychological benefits.
