Antimicrobials in dentistry: results of a survey into the treatment and prevention of infections, the prophylaxis of infective endocarditis, and the combination of antibiotics. combination

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic choice preferences of dentists in their treatment of acute odontogénica infections, the use of antibiotics in dental extractions, the prevention of infective endocarditis, and the management of antibiotic combinations to achieve synergism.
Material and Method: 113 dentists were randomly surveyed, being asked questions relating to training and professional performance, type of practice, antibiotic of first choice, use of antibiotics post-extraction, antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with underlying cardiac conditions, and management of antibiotic combinations.
Results: 80.5% (n=91/113) were dentists in general practice; 89.4% (n=101/113) served as dentists in private practice; 58.4% (n=66/113) showed no preference between using amoxicillin or clindamycin as the antibiotic of first choice; 75.2% (n=85/113) did not prescribe antibiotics post-extraction; 49.6% (n=56/113) used antibiotic combinations to achieve synergism; 96% (n=48/50) did not know the prophylaxis protocol for infective endocarditis in susceptible patients.
Conclusions: Although antibiotic choice preferences are consistent with international standards, this study provides evidence that continuous updating is needed to ensure the best possible management of antibiotics in dental practice, especially in terms of the frequency of drug administration, the use of antibiotics combinations, and the prophylaxis of infective endocarditis.
