Posterolateral Bochdalek diaphragmatic defect. A complicated case of congenital hernia in adult

ABSTRACT

Bochdalek hernia is a congenital disease originated between 8th and 10th weeks of intrauterine fetal life, characterized by a posterolateral defect in the diaphragm, in which the organs of the abdominal cavity move towards the thoracic cavity. This disease appears approximately in 2.32 of each 10,000 births, being exceptional in the adult with few cases around the world. We report the clinical case of 50 years old male patient, who suffered disease epigastrache of moderate intensity concomitant with multiple vomits of nourishing content, and nausea. Physical examination showed left hypoexpansibility in hemithorax with hydroair noises in samelateral thoracic cavity; tomografic study revealed Bochdalek hernia and atelectasis on medium third of left hemithorax.
