Recombinant human erythropoietin and doping, risk in young athlete

ABSTRACT

In these two decades, there have been cases of doping with the use of recombinant human erythropoietin (RhEpo) in international competitions in adolescents and adults who play high performance sports like the duathlon (running and cycling) and those that practice mainly route biking; in order to increase their hemoglobin levels and improve their muscle oxygenation. This article reviews basic concepts of RhEpo use in medicine, pharmacology, actions, indications and adverse effects. Also it discusses the adverse effects on non-medical indications (doping) that occur from mild symptoms to serious adverse effects such as severe dehydration, hypertension, stroke and sudden death. We conclude that RhEpo has no indication in young athletes seeking to improve their physical performance. Dietary medical alternatives are discussed, as the use of oral iron, to raise hemoglobin levels.
