ABSTRACT

Nail bed injuries are a frequent pathology in trauma hospital services. The new adhesive biodegradable materials like cyanocrylate, have has demonstrated to be very useful in different reconstructive procedures. The objective of this study is to present the experience and the clinic results in the repair of the nail bed injuries using the 2-octylcyanocrylate as an adhesive tissue. Fifteen patients were included, who were referred to the emergency room of the Hospital General “Xoco”, from March to November, 2000 and they had injured bed nail repaired with 2-octylcyanocrylate to evaluate aesthetic and functional results, with a follow up that lasted 180 days. 86 percent were men with an average age of 23 years-old. The injuries were in 22.2% simple lacerations, 50% stars and 27% severe. Thirteen patients presented good result and regular in two patients. No infection or dehiscence cases were presented during the treatment. The conclusion is that 2-octylcyanocrylate is useful material in the repair of the nail bed injury; good results are obtained from the aesthetic and functional point of view and possible complications with other treatment modalities, like nail bed adhered and deformed nail are avoidable. The application is easy and painless, therefore we propose it as an alternative treatment.
