ABSTRACT

Bite force (BF) is an indicator of the functional status of the masticatory system. The aim of this study is to present useful and accessible information on BF for use in dental practice. It seeks to emphasize the fact that the direct assessment of BF depends on a number of factors, for which purpose a range of examples of the current consensus and lack thereof regarding BF to be found in the relevant scientific literature are described.
The first part of the article discusses the importance of BF in masticatory efficiency and its relationship to the consistency of the food consumed, as well as the range of measuring devices and techniques used that can affect its recording, and its relationship to age, sex, growth, and development.
