Akira Endo identified a cholesterol-lowering substance that antagonized HMGCoA reductase, decreasing cholesterol biosynthesis. These studies led to the development of statin, which was efficient to decrease cholesterol levels in blood in order to prevent atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
