Akira Endo identificó una sustancia que bloqueaba una de las principales enzimas en la biosíntesis del colesterol, la HMG-CoA reductasa, con lo que accedió al desarrollo de las estatinas, que disminuyen la aterosclerosis y, en consecuencia, la enfermedad cardiovascular.
