ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the sperm cervical-factor on infertility postcoital test has been used. However, the clinical applicability of the postcoital test is controversial because its reliability is limited.
Objective: To compare the results of the postcoital tests performed on infertile patients who previously were corrected infertility factors associated with the achievement of pregnancy.
Patients and methods: We performed a retrospective clinical and observational study. The study population included infertile patients treated during the period of January 1st to December 31th of 2008, in the Hospital of Gynaecology and Obstetrics 3 of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. In all patients studied the factors associated with infertility were corrected and postcoital test was conducted as part of the evaluation of cervical-sperm interaction. The variables analyzed were: age, type of infertility, duration of infertility, and the infertility factors. The primary goal to analyze was the result of the postcoital test and the achievement of pregnancy. Also, we studied the association between postcoital test result and the pregnancy achievement using Chi square test.
Results: One hundred sixty-one patients were included. We observed 88.2% of altered post-coital tests and 11.8% were normal. In patients with altered tests we found a pregnancy rate of 37.3% and patients that had a normal test the pregnancy rate was of 21.1%. The statistical inference revealed not significant differences between subgroups.
Conclusions: The are not significant differences between the pregnancy achievement and postcoital test results in the population studied.
