The measurement of salivary pH in pregnant and non-pregnant patients

ABSTRACT

Introduction.Many changes take place in a woman's body during pregnancy, making her vulnerable to oral disease and affecting the health of both the mother and the product.
In the oral cavity, pH is important given that without the buffer effect, cariogenic microorganisms proliferate easily, thus causing rapid destruction of the tooth.
General Objectives: To determine the salivary pH of pregnant and non-pregnant women. Specific Objectives: To determine the amount of saliva secreted in 5 minutes, to identify hygienic-dietary habits, and to determine the DMFT index of the patients concerned.
Design Methodology. An observational, descriptive, transversal study was performed. Sample: 25 pregnant patients and 25 non-pregnant patients. Universe of study: ambulatory female patients between 16 and 45 years old. Study population: 50 patients. Method. Each patient filled out a questionnaire on hygiene and dietary habits. Unstimulated saliva secreted for 5 minutes was collected in a beaker, following which a pH test strip was introduced to measure its pH. An oral examination was performed in which the DMFT and Löe and Silness indices were recorded. Material.50 Crissa brand pH test strips, measuring range: ph 0 - 14; resolution: 1 pH.
Results.The average salivary pH of the exposed group was 6.2 ± 0.7, the average of the control group was 6.24 ± 0.7. The average amount of saliva secreted in the 5-minute testing period was 3.02 ml ± 1.6 in the exposed group, while in the control group it was 2.4 ml ± 0.95. The average DMFT index of the exposed group was 7.4 ± 3.29, while in the control group it was 9.6± 5.33.
Conclusions.The salivary pH of pregnant women was found to be slightly more acidic than that of nonpregnant women and within the range of “safe pH levels”. Pregnant women secreted approximately 0.624 milliliters more saliva in 5 minutes than did nonpregnant women.
