Key words:

Melatonin, pineal gland.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland or epiphysis from tryptophan, one of the twenty essential amino acids that constitute the living matter, it is inhibited by light and stimulated by darkness and it is produced synthetically in tablets, not only applied to insomnia, but also in anorexia and depression, with cytoprotective natural action, it prevents the cell damage phenomena and it acts as an “anti-aging” cellular and organic substance. Development: A bibliographic review was carried out where an updated data on the Melatonin hormone were collected. The fundamental purpose was to identify the main effects of the hormone, its relationship with the aging process and associated diseases.
