ABSTRACT

Dexmedetomidine is an α2-adrenergic agonist that produces sedation, analgesia, and a decrease in arterial blood pressure and heart rate, due to its effects on the sympathetic nervous system. Its main application is used to produce sedation for no more than 24 hours in patients in the intensive care unit, and no further studies have been reported for imaging procedures. We present the experience of sedation for MRI throughout a period of 5 months, indicating main differences for gender, age, medication used and the reason for sedation. We used dexmedetomidine with a single dose of 1 µg/kg to produce sedation during MRI. Satisfactory results were registered, as well as reduction of cost and lower pharmacological interaction because of the use of various medications.
