El origen de la acidez en la glucolisis anaerobia

ABSTRACT

When anaerobic metabolism of glucose is dealt in many courses of Biochemistry it is affirmed that the final product of such a process is lactic acid. However, the evidence points out that lactate dehydrogenase produces lactate and not lactic acid. On the other hand, it has been shown that when glucose is catabolized anaerobically in mammalian organisms, acidity is produced. But, which is the origin of hydrogen ions during anaerobiosis? One trend holds that the hydrolysis of ATP is the source of hydrogen ions, but another trend sustains that, since electroneutrality has to be preserved in any condition, ionization of water allows to keep equilibrium between cations and anions when anion concentration is increased as occurs when large quantities of lactate are produced.
