ABSTRACT

This article aims at offering a brief survey of some trends that have influenced the ways of studying diseased man. At the beginning the science concept is touched upon, as well as the importance of logical empiricism in it. It is mentioned that observation-based medical research has made important contributions into knowledge and that the inductive-observational method, largely used in medical research, has substantiated causal explanations. Reconsideration of the most utilized current paradigm is proposed, its limitations shown: when the point is to answer questions that give meaning to human being. A particular differentiation is made between the qualitative and quantitative methods with an emphasis on the need for different methodological approaches to the study of diseased man. The reflection implies to be used for solving problems presented in the research of man in his social context, which means under conditions of health or disease.
