Identification and distribution of Langerhans´cells in planus lichen and pemphigus vulgaris

ABSTRACT

Langerhans cells are generally located in squamous layer and seldom in lamina propia; they can be distinguished by their morphology and location. The aim of the present study was to assess their immunoexpression and distribution using S-100 protein in lichen planus and in pemphigus vulgaris. Twenty cases of lichen planus and 10 cases of pemphigus vulgaris were stained with S-100 (Protein Monoclonal, mouse IgG). The total average of S-100 positive cells in lichen planus was 5.15 ± 1.79 cells in epithelium and 2.82 ± 6.05 in lamina propia. Spearman correlation was applied obtaining rho = 1.02 (p £ 0.05). The average of cells in epithelium in pemphigus was 1.76 ± 1.43 and 1.78 ± 2.41 in lamina propia, rho = 0.8636 (p ≤ 0.025). Lichen planus showed a greater number of S-100 positive cells than pemphigus, lesions behaved in an inverse way, the expression in lichen planus was severe in epithelium and in pemphigus the expression was severe in lamina propia; this can be due to epithelium acantholysis in pemphigus.
