ABSTRACT

Objective: Assess the reliability of diagnostic ultrasound three-dimensional (ECO 3D) vs the two-dimensional (ECO 2D) and the physical examination of the fistula perianal correlating it with the findings preoperative. Patients: The review of clinical histories of 50 patients, operated from June 2006 to December 2010 at the University Hospital of Caracas, (iv) General Surgery Service, Unit of Coloproctology, who exhibited clinical diagnosis of anorectal fistulous abscess. 33 patients 2D ultrasound was performed and to 17 patients 3D ultrasound, we compared the results of the ECO with the IDX clinical. Methods: Retrospective, descriptive study and use of percentage for the analysis of the qualitative variables. Results: ECO 3D has a reliability diagnoses greater to ECO 2D; ECO 3D shows a good agreement with the surgery in the diagnosis of primary and secondary passages. It is an instrument of great importance in the handling of the perianal fistula and of aid to decide the surgical conduct to follow, for being a method fast diagnosis, of low cost, with possibility of use in our means and tolerated well by the patients. Conclusions: The 3D ultrasound is has more sensitivity and specificity to diagnose anorectal fistulous abscess.
